Rob & Christie Buckingham
Senior Ministers, Bayside Church
Rob and Christie are the Senior Ministers of Bayside Church – a contemporary multi-site church in the southern bayside region of Melbourne. They started the church in 1992 with a team of 40 people and over the past 25 years the church has grown to over 2,000 people in regular attendance. Bayside Church has a strong commitment to make a positive difference in its community and beyond. Bayside’s slogan is “Church has changed – check it out!”
Rob and Christie’s passion is to engage their Christian faith with issues of justice in today’s world including (but not limited to) standing up for those on death row, asylum seekers, prisoners and the poor.
Along with radio work, Rob and Christie have also co-hosted an interactive TV Chat show called The Exchange.
Christie and Rob have three daughters, Georgia-Grace, Paris and Trinity.
Christie Christie came to Australia from Northern Ireland in 1986 and worked at Youth Alive Australia. During that time she developed a volunteer base that saw the youth rallies grow from a few hundred to well over 10,000 in Victoria and around 50,000 around the nation.
Christie is the Vice President of Bayside Community Care, an organisation committed to providing care for people who are struggling, disadvantaged and vulnerable. The organisation runs a community meals program in two Melbourne locations and provides over 11,000 meals annually; distributes emergency food packages; hosts a community Christmas Lunch for 300 people at Christmas and works with other NGO’s and government bodies both inside Australia and in other countries including Asia, Africa, the United States and Europe in order to achieve its purpose.
Christie initiated and established the Bayside Forever Home in South Africa with a team of dedicated volunteers. The generous support of a benefactor enabled them to purchased a home that cares for children that have been abandoned and have various special needs including Aids and HIV.
Being raised in the midst of “The Troubles” in Northern Ireland, Christie has been involved in working in areas of reconciliation across what was then sectarian divide.
Since 2012, she has helped prisoners in Kerobokan Prison in Bali to have purpose by developing computer skills, English, cooking and craft. Christie has recently been campaigning for prisoners on death row and is committed to seeing the death penalty abolished. In 2015, Christie was among those who assisted with the spiritual and pastoral wellbeing of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran. She was with Myuran as his spiritual adviser until his execution.
Rob After a near death experience in a truck at age 19, Rob was challenged on his perception that God was non-existent. Shortly after, Rob committed his life to Jesus.
Rob became a popular professional breakfast announcer in Western Australia and went on to have the number one program in Geraldton. In 1984, Rob was called to pastoral ministry and attended Bible college where he trained to become an ordained pastor.
In 1988, Rob moved to Melbourne to become an Assistant Pastor of Lighthouse Church in Keysborough serving as Minister of Christian Education.
In addition to his call to Christian ministry, Rob’s love for the air waves continued and he went on to work at 3MP for 15 years and hosted 3MP’s Rob Buckingham and Friends program each Sunday from 1993-1999. He interviewed guests such as Whitney Houston, Lionel Ritchie and as well as many well-known community figures.
In 1992, Rob pioneered a church in the Bayside suburb of Cheltenham which he commenced with a small group of people. From humble beginnings the church has now grown to become large and influential in the city of Melbourne with campuses in Cheltenham and Frankston. In December 2002, he began work with Melbourne's new Christian radio station, Light FM.
